9 Things to avoid to have beautiful teeth

Those who start everything with a smile will succeed in most things. The desire to smile is however spoiled for some, by the shame of revealing unsightly teeth. However, unsightly teeth are not necessarily linked to a lack of dental hygiene. They are often due to seemingly innocuous habits.

Staining of teeth, bare dental necks, cavities: in fact, teeth are among the hardest substances in the human body. But certain daily habits regularly put them at risk. This leads not only to aesthetic damage but also to health problems.

Among these habits that prevent you from having beautiful teeth, we can mention:

  1. Excessive toothbrushing

Brushing your teeth is the most effective way to take care of your teeth. However, if you apply too much pressure when brushing or if you use a toothbrush that is too hard, the tooth enamel erodes. The gums also retract and the sensitive dental necks are exposed.

Tip: Option for toothbrushes with soft or medium-soft bristles and use massaging motions rather than rubbing when brushing. Also, you should brush your teeth no more than three times a day.

  1. Eat lots of fruit and salad

If you eat too many acidic foods, it can attack the protective enamel of your teeth. Where such enamel degradation occurs, the tooth appears dull or transparent. The teeth are also very sensitive to hot, cold, sweet, or acid.

Tip: If you like to eat fruit or salad, take long breaks between meals. Thus, the saliva in the mouth has time to neutralize the acidity and the tooth enamel can regenerate.

  1. Drink coffee, tea, and red wine

Over time, coloring foods such as coffee, black tea, or red wine deposit a yellow veil on the teeth. These stains are particularly stubborn if you consume fruit or fruit juice in addition to these foods. Indeed, it is not only the delicate biofilm on the teeth that are then affected by discoloration but the enamel itself.

Tip: After drinking coffee or tea, you should brush your teeth within half an hour. Or you can always drink a glass of water with it. The next time you have breakfast, avoid combining coffee and orange juice.

  1. Regularly use whitening toothpaste

By themselves, whitening toothpaste is not harmful. Like normal toothpaste, they clean the teeth of dirt and stains. However, as they generally contain coarser microparticles, dentists advise against the regular use of this toothpaste as they risk damaging the tooth substance. People whose teeth are already damaged or whose dental necks are exposed should also avoid using whitening toothpaste.

Tip:  Whitening toothpaste only has a superficial effect. So don’t expect stunning results. If your teeth are naturally yellow, professional whitening treatment will be more effective. 

  1. Use toothpicks

Toothpicks help release food remains from the interdental spaces. However, their use always carries the risk of damaging the gums.

Tip: dental floss is thinner, which not only allows it to penetrate the interdental spaces better, but also to be used more gently than a toothpick.

  1. Snacks for the munchies

Acidic foods aren’t the only ones that attack tooth enamel. Sugar and fat also soften it and additionally provide an optimal breeding ground for caries-causing bacteria.

Tip: Be careful not to eat or drink sugary drinks for at least two hours after each snack.

  1. Using teeth as a tool

Opening capsules and tearing sachets, some don’t need tools, they just use their teeth. But beware: the teeth are not designed to withstand such stresses. Inconspicuous furrows can appear in the enamel and, in the worst case, small pieces of teeth can even break off.

  1. Brush your teeth after eating something acidic

As already mentioned, acidic foods attack tooth enamel. That’s why you should wait at least half an hour after eating an apple or drinking fruit juice before brushing your teeth. Otherwise, the toothpaste may erode the enamel too much.

Tip: sugar-free chewing gum increases saliva flow, which neutralizes acidity in the mouth. 

  1. Smoking

Cigarette smoke discolors teeth. These stains usually cannot be removed by normal dental hygiene. In addition, smoking promotes inflammation of the gums, even periodontitis: the gums retract and the tooth loosens. Smokers are indeed particularly affected by dental problems.

Tip: Smokers should favor toothpaste with high fluoride content, as they make the teeth stronger. In addition, careful dental hygiene is particularly important for smokers. Antibacterial mouthwashes can reduce inflammation, but not prevent it. Smokers already know that cigarettes are generally harmful to health.
