Dogs are faithful and loyal animals that bring a lot of joy to their masters, but sometimes they surprise their owners with behaviors that seem quite strange: rubbing the ground with their hind legs after defecating, greeting each other by sniffing hindquarters, or suddenly rushing out of a place as if bitten by a tarantula.

What often sounds strange to humans is part of the dog language. Here are 10 “weird” behaviors and what they mean:

1. He rubs his bottom on the floor

The image is funny, of course, but the reality is quite different: this behavior indicates a health problem. It is, therefore, necessary to go to a veterinarian to determine the cause.

 

2. He scrubs the floor with his hind paws after he does his business.

It is an instinctive behavior that they use to mark their territory and reinforce their scent. Everything is normal!

3. He eats feces

It’s disgusting, but this behavior is not uncommon. It is called “coprophagia” and is justified by the fact that animals want to compensate for a lack of nutrients. However, this theory is controversial. For some researchers, this behavior is the result of a bad habit that can be counteracted with education.

4. He digs holes

There are several reasons for this: either it’s a search for freshness when it’s hot, or it’s fun, or it’s boredom. To prevent your companion from ruining your garden, make sure he spends enough time and if that’s not the reason, protect your plants!

5. He eats grass

Many dog ​​owners try to keep their pets from eating grass. They want to avoid it making them sick. But that’s completely normal behavior. However, if your dog vomits frequently after a walk, you should have him checked for other causes that have nothing to do with eating grass, just to be sure.

6. He rides on other dogs

This behavior is not unusual, it is a sign of dominance. By doing this, the dog seeks to gain the upper hand over one of its fellows, or even over one of its masters. Between dogs, it’s a way to communicate, but if he starts to do it on you, you have to put him in his place. If you don’t, your dog will think he’s dominating you, and you may get up early so that he listens to you daily.

 

7. His paws smell bad

There is no need to worry, the smell is completely normal and comes from the bacteria and fatty acids that are in the dog’s skin to keep him healthy. The ears can also give off a very unpleasant smell.

8. He often licks his nose

Dogs regularly lick their noses to keep them moist. This helps to improve their sense of smell and therefore better identify odors. However, in certain circumstances, this behavior is a message that indicates a feeling of anxiety, even fear. They, therefore, reassure themselves by licking their noses and lips. If you notice that your companion is doing this all the time, try to identify the source of stress and remedy it.

9. He doesn’t like certain people

You may also have noticed that your dog likes some people a little less than others. This behavior is linked to its nose: the finer its sense of smell, the more difficult it is for it to find two-legged friends. Certain pheromones in people’s bodies tell him if they are potentially dangerous or not. But it’s not just pheromones, big hats, children, or people with unusual physical characteristics that can scare him off too.
